Daggett Playing Spoiler for the Republicans in 2009

10/20/2009, by Proloy Bhatta

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Corzine (D) 39%, Christie (R) 39%, Daggett (I) 14%.
  • Christie held a 12% lead on July 14 before the popularity of Daggett siphoned away votes.
  • McDonnell (R) 49%, Deeds (D) 41%.

Two states are holding Governor elections on November 3, 2009: New Jersey and Virginia. Both seats are currently held by Democrats but Republicans have a great shot at winning both seats.

There are 28 Democratic Governors and 22 Republican Governors. By winning both of these races, Republicans would narrow the margin to 26-24.

Virginia Polls

Clarus Research Group, October 18-19, Virginia's Governor Race

McDonnell (R) 49%, Deeds (D) 41%.

This is an open seat, currently held by Democrat Timothy Kaine.

McDonnell has held a lead in every Virginia poll since early June. This is McDonnell's race to lose.

New Jersey Polls

Monmouth University/Gannett, October 15-18, New Jersey's Governor Race

Corzine (D) 39%, Christie (R) 39%, Daggett (I) 14%.

The Independent candidate Chris Daggett is the wildcard in this race. As per the chatter on Youtube, many folks believe that Daggett is bought and paid for by the Corzine campaign to siphon off votes from Christie. Although there is no evidence to support that, Daggett's run is hurting Christie.

Christie held a 12% lead in the polls on July 14 but that has since dwindled down to a dead heat in today's poll.

Because of this, Republicans have started to put the pressure on Daggett.

According to the Examiner, Republicans are targeting Daggett with attack ads.
