Democrats Outnumbered Republicans By Double Digits in New Jersey Election

11/3/2009, by Proloy Bhatta

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Party affiliation of those that voted: Democrat 42%, Republican 30%, Independent/other 28%.
  • 58% of voters approved of Obama's job performance as president.
  • Christie won those that stated "Property Taxes" as the most important issue by 40%.

For all of those folks that make a big deal about the fact that a dwindling number of people are declaring themselves as Republicans, check this out:

Democrats outnumbered Republicans, 42% to 30% among those that voted in New Jersey.

No matter how you voted today, do you usually think of yourself as a: Christie Corzine Daggett
Democrat (42%) 8% 86% 5%
Republican (30%) 91% 6% 3%
Independent or something else (28%) 58% 31% 9%

But despite all of this, the Republican candidate, Christie, was able to win because he carried Independents by almost double. Just because there are fewer people willing to say they are Republican does not mean that they changed their political affiliation. Their views are still likely to be right of center.

58% of voters approved of Barack Obama's job performance yet 18% of those voted for Christie.

Just as the exit polls in Virginia showed, 60% of NJ voters said that Barack Obama was not a factor in who they voted for.

Since Corzine is an incumbent, Christie carried those voters that were "very worried" about the direction of the nation's economy.

Very worried (56%) 59% 36% 4%
Somewhat worried (33%) 31% 61% 8%
Not too worried (8%) 27% 66% 5%
Not at all worried (2%) - - -

But Christie did NOT win this election because of the economy. Of those voters that said the economy was their main issue in making their decision, they broke to Corzine 60% to 34%. Christie won because of the 26% of voters that stated property taxes as their main issue -- he won among them by 40%.
