2010 Will Be About Incumbents

2/10/2010, by Proloy Bhatta

HIGHLIGHTS

  • 43% of Americans trust the Democratic party, 37% trust the Republican party.
  • 48% of Americans are anti-incumbent.
  • Congress Approval: 26% Approve, 71% Approve.

ABC performed a very thorough poll that shows a complete picture of the current political climate.

Here is Obama's approval rating on the issues.

Issue Approve Disapprove
Overall 51 46
Terrorism 56 39
Jobs 47 51
Economy 45 53
Health Care 43 53
Budget Deficit 40 56

Americans continue to trust Obama over the Republicans in Congress on the issues but his lead is shrinking -- specifically on handling the federal budget deficit.

Issue Obama Republicans
Economy 47 42
Health Care 46 41
Budget 45 43
Terrorism 47 42
Jobs 48 41

Obama's lead on the economy and the federal budget deficit has shrunk from 12% to 5% and 14% to 2% respectively.

Obama's lead is similar to the lead the Democrats have in general.

43% of Americans trust the Democratic party, 37% trust the Republican party. Despite being behind, the Republicans have narrowed the gap significantly. The Democrats once held a 16% lead in November 2009 and 20% in September 2009.

48% of Americans are anti-incumbent and this sentiment is fueling a 48% to 45% lead for Republicans in the generic 2010 ballot despite being trusted less than the Democrats.

Congress has reached their lowest approval ratings since the last election.

Jobs

Obama's largest lead against the Republicans is his handling of creating jobs. That is also the domestic issue in which he gets his highest approval rating.

2010 will be an election where congress will be purged of incumbents but 2012 will be all about whether or not the economy improves under the Obama administration.
