Democrats Need Better Strategy for 2010

1/20/2010, by Proloy Bhatta

HIGHLIGHTS

  • The Democrats need to write small bills with no pork so that if the Republicans go into "NO" mode, then it is apparent what they are voting against.
  • The Tea Party movement is the most mobilized of all groups. Yield to them a little bit by finding a common ground.
  • The congress needs to work for the people if they want to keep their jobs.

Democrats in congress have an approval rating (41%) that is double digits better than their Republican counterparts (30%) ... but when the 2010 election comes, it will be off with their heads -- regardless of party.

And because the Democrats are the ones in power -- they will be at risk of losing their majority.

They had it great for a year. They had a 60-vote super majority that would have allowed them to ram down any bill they wanted. But Scott Brown's victory in Massachusetts has made it clear that the Democrats need to change their image as socialists gone mad.

The Democratic party has to restore faith in their party by doing the following:

  1. create small, simple, hard to attack bills with NO pork
  2. focusing on the issues Americans care about most
  3. work with Republicans on shrinking the federal budget deficit

Small, Simple Bills

The Republicans, from a strategic perspective, are smart in voting down everything the Democrats bring their way. They may be seen as the party of NO but that is what a lot of American want ...

  • NO increase in government spending
  • NO government control of health care
  • NO pork
  • NO bailouts

The Democrats need to write small bills with no pork so that if the Republicans go into "NO" mode, then it is apparent what they are voting against. By making these bills expansive and loaded with pork, Republicans have a great reason to shoot everything down.

Focus on Issues Americans Care About Most

The Tea Party movement is the most mobilized of all groups. Yield to them a little bit by finding a common ground.

They want smaller government, well then shrink government the way you want to.

They want to end corporate bailouts and government corruption, shouldn't you be doing that anyways? 56% of Americans disapprove of Obama's handling of the federal budget deficit and this is the exact issue the Tea Baggers care about most.

Work with Republicans

Despite the fact that we had an explosion in the federal budget deficit during the Bush administration, the current administration is not doing any better. Obama and his Democratic controlled congress have to work together on doing this with small, simple changes to the system.

Obama promised that he'd make the government departments more efficient but why has that yet to happen? Why hasn't anything substantial and positive happened in the past year?

The congress needs to work for the people if they want to keep their jobs.
