Peter Schiff Polls Well Against Chris Dodd

7/3/2009, by Proloy Bhatta

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Dodd 42%, Schiff 38%, Undecided 20%.
  • Simmons 47%, Dodd 38%, Undecided 15%.
  • "Republican voters are only slightly more supportive of Simmons than Schiff" according to Wilson Research Strategies.

Peter Schiff requested Wilson Research Strategies to conduct a telephone survey of Connecticut voters to see if it was feasible for him to run for US Senate in 2010.

In a general election matchup against Chris Dodd:

  • Dodd 42%
  • Schiff 38%
  • Undecided 20%

What this poll really shows us is that Dodd is beatable. Unlike most contenders facing incumbents, Schiff would not be wasting his time running against Dodd.

Peter Schiff is relatively unknown in politics as he currently holds no elected office. But his resume is flawless.

  • President of Euro Pacific Capital.
  • Economic advisor to Ron Paul.
  • One of the lone economists to correctly predict the economic downturn.

Perhaps the real race will be the one between Peter Schiff and Rob Simmons for the Republican Senate primary.

Simmons would beat Dodd according to the poll.

  • Simmons 47%
  • Dodd 38%
  • Undecided 15%

Wilson Research does not think Simmons has that much of an advantage over Dodd despite running for 6 months.

Here is what they had to say:

"Republican voters are only slightly more supportive (just outside the margin of error) of Simmons than Schiff, despite knowing Simmons much better and for a longer period of time. Schiff garners the exact same support among strong Republicans as Simmons does, indicating that Schiff could start the race with significant base support, equal to the support Simmons currently enjoys."

What they conveniently left out is they measured these candidates' Republican support when pitted against Chris Dodd. Any Republican would get a large Republican following when pitted against a Democrat, wouldn't they?

The thing that is lacking here is a poll between Simmons and Schiff. But I think there was. My guess would be that this company did poll Schiff pitted up against Simmons but because Schiff did poorly, he decided not to release those results. Why should he? Simmons has been running his campaign for six months and Schiff is just testing the waters. And since Schiff paid for this poll, he's only going to release what makes him look good.

But that's just speculation.
