Support for Healthcare and Democrats in 2010 Down

12/17/2009, by Proloy Bhatta

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Average support for health care: 39%. Average opposition: 49%.
  • The 2010 generic ballot nodded up at 42%.
  • With a tea party candidate, Democrat: 36%, Tea Party: 23%, Republicans: 18%.

The Democrats are in a precarious position as 2009 draws to an end and the buzz about the 2010 election heats up.

The support for the health care bill has dropped into the 30s. This is not surprising. Even Democratic leaders like Howard Dean are calling for the bill to be scrapped.

Maxine Waters is also not a big fan of the new medicare proposals being considered.

Opposition exceeds support by double digits according to the poll of polls of the latest six polls.

Pollster Date Favor Oppose
AVERAGE   39% 49%
Pew Research Poll 12/9-13/09 35 48
AP GFK Poll 12/10-14/09 36 44
NBC Wall Street Journal 12/11-14/09 32 47
ABC 12/10-13/09 44 51
USA Today Gallup Poll 12/11-13/09 46 48
Rasmussen Reports 12/12-13/09 40 56

Here is what Pew Research had to say about health care.

A third of opponents (33%) cite too much government involvement in health care as the most important reason for opposing the legislation. Other factors – such as health care reform being too expensive (17%) or that people’s own health care might suffer (13%) – are cited as most important by fewer of the bills’ opponents.

If that wasn't bad enough, the Republicans have nodded things up for the 2010 election.

AVERAGE   42% 42%
NBC News 12/11-14/09 43 41

Gallup 12/11-13/09 48 45
CNN 12/2-3/09 40 39
Bloomberg 12/3-7/09 38 42

Rasmussen Reports, however, found something interesting. The Tea Party would beat the Republican party.

If a Tea Party candidate is in the race, the picture changes dramatically. A separate, three-way Generic Ballot test finds that Democrats attract 36% of the vote, while the Tea Party candidate picks up 23% and Republicans finish third at 18%. Another 22% are undecided.
