Potential Presidential Candidates

Huckabee and Ron Paul Polling Well

4/14/2010, by Proloy Bhatta

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Huckabee 24, Romney 20, Palin 15, Paul 8.
  • CNN: Obama 53, Romney 45. Obama 54, Romney 45.
  • Rasmussen: Obama 42, Ron Paul 41.

Here are the crosstabs of the CNN poll conducted last week that shows in a Republican primary, Mike Huckabee would best Mitt Romney. Look, if you have been paying attention, you would know that Huckabee has consistently been at the top of the polls.

Here is a poll of polls average that shows Huckabee within decimal points of Romney.

Pollster Date Romney Huckabee Palin
AVERAGE   22.6% 21.8% 17.8%
CNN 4/9-11/10 20 24 15
Clarus Research Group 3/17-20/10 29 19 18
Marist College 8/3-6/09 21 19 20
FOX News 7/21-22/09 22 21 17
ABC News 7/15-18/09 21 26 19

Doing a quick check on Google News, we see that "Romney" yield double as many documents as "Huckabee" -- 2,200 versus 1,100... Not only is that unfortunate but it is on a day where a major poll shows Huckabee as the winner.

What's worse is a saturation of the news with stories about Palin. "Palin" gets almost 10,000 references on Google News. Palin gets ratings plain and simple but does Republican voters a disservice as they have already decided to pass on her.

And it is not just Republican voters that have passed on her but all registered voters. Against Obama, she fares the worst among the core four politicians: Romney, Huckabee, Palin, and Gingrich.

Obama Romney
53 45
Obama Huckabee
54 45
Obama Palin
55 42
Obama Gingrich
55 43

But if we really want to get picky on how the potential 2012 candidates are being mentioned in the news, look no further than Ron Paul. He polled 8% in the Republican primary. That is significant because he ran a pretty enthusiastic 2008 campaign and his ideology of limited government parallel the fervent Tea Party movement. Why he does not get more coverage now is appauling.

Additionally, Rasmussen Reports has just released a new poll out. Obama and Ron Paul in a dead heat. Obama 42%, Ron Paul 41%.
