BP Oil Spill Versus Hurricane Katrina6/17/2010, by Proloy Bhatta HIGHLIGHTS
After most major US events, polls are conducted asking adults nationwide whether they approve or disapprove of the president's handling of the event. In the case of the BP oil spill, Obama is getting very low marks but Bush got low marks as well in his handling of Hurricane Katrina. According to Wikipedia, Hurricane Katrina formed 8/23/05, reached peak strength on 8/28/05, and dissipated on 8/30/05. At the one-year anniversary mark, a slew of polls were conducted on Bush's handling of Hurricane Katrina, the victims, etc.
CNN conducted a poll on Obama's handling of the oil spill.
Disapproval ratings of both presidents near 60% in their handlings of their respective environmental disasters. Soon after the incident, Bush's approval rating was better. Approve 44%, Disapprove 48% according to CBS News in a poll they conducted 9/9-13/05. The same was true for Obama. According to CNN late last month, his approval-disapproval was 46%, 51% respectively. Bush's approval/disapproval ratings were near 50-50 immediately after Katrina just as Obama's after the oil spill. I bring this up to draw a parallel between Bush and Obama in the two major catastrophic environmental of this century. After events like these happen, what are the Presidents supposed to do to sufficiently garner the approval of a majority of Americans? Are our expectations too lofty? Have we had incompetent presidents? Are the critics of the Presidents who disapprove of him at all costs just so vocal as to sway public opinion against the President, whom ever it is.
