Misleading Title by Gallup on Holiday Spending

12/21/2009, by Proloy Bhatta

HIGHLIGHTS

  • 63% say economy did not affect their decision not to travel.
  • 15% say they will travel and they will not cut costs.
  • Despite that, Gallup says "Economy Forcing Many in U.S. to Cut Back on Holiday Travel".

We have plugged in new state poll numbers for Obama in California, Florida, New York, and Pennsylvania.

State Date BO Election Margin Approve Disapprove
California 12/1-8/09 24 61 33
New York 12/7-13/09 27 59 36
Florida 12/7-11/09 3 55 42
Pennsylvania 12/8-14/09 11 49 45

With the holidays coming up, the weak economy is on everybody's minds and that could be causing Obama's approval rating to drop. Not only because folks are frustrated with their own economic situations but because the Government is focusing a lot of attention on Afghanistan, health care, and global warming.

Gallup wrote an article today entitled "Economy Forcing Many in U.S. to Cut Back on Holiday Travel". But the responses contradict the title.

  • 63% of respondents to their poll said that they are not travelling but the economy did not affect their plans.
  • 15% stated that they are travelling and had no intention to cut back on the cost of their travels.

This means that a total of 78% said the economy had no impact on their travels.

When folks are asked to respond to questions such as these, the respondents feel shy to tell the truth about the economic hardship that they are going through. We know the economy is bad. We know that there are more than 22% that are either cutting back the costs of travelling or travelling altogether but the data they have does not match the title.
