Health Care Summit2/27/2010, by Proloy Bhatta HIGHLIGHTS
Is Obama's health care summit politically motivated or a serious attempt to find common ground? According to FOX News and USA Today, 50% and 56% respectively, feel that the summit is a sincere effort by Obama to reach a compromise. 40% said that it was just for show in both polls. Additionally, USA Today found that only 41% felt it was a sincere effort by the Republicans. Politicisized or not, Obama was being chastised for not having health care meetings and doing so was somewhat necessary. Furthermore, the Democratic party needed to energize their base. We have heard a lot from the "Government wants to run our lives" crowd but it was time to give the other side a reason to mobilize. But whether it will work remains to be seen. The Republican talking point through the summit was to scrap the bill and start over. The same FOX News poll showed that 59% were in agreement -- just 34% wanted to pass the current bill. It will be interesting to how the health care summit affects the polls. According to FOX, only 37% approve of the way Obama is handling the health care situation and according to the poll of polls only 41% favor the current health care proposal in congress. |
