Polling Numbers on Health Care Reform, Poll of Polls11/18/2009, by Proloy Bhatta HIGHLIGHTS
Do you support the proposed health care bills in Congress?
Averaging the past five polls on health care, we find that, although not a majority, the opposition to the health care bills in congress is leading the support by over 5%. According to CNN, 10% of Americans thought the bill was not liberal enough. 34% said too liberal. Obama's Handling of Health CareDo you approve or disapprove of Obama's handling of health care?
Public Option
The CBS poll found that 61% of adults favored the public option. But question wording is key. Americans are more likely to support a public option if it is only offered to those that are uninsured as opposed to being available to the general public. The way the question was worded suggests that it would be for those that are uninsured -- this likely inflated the "approve" a bit. Here is how the question was worded. "Would you favor or oppose the government offering some people who are uninsured the choice of a government-administered health insurance plan -- also known as a 'public option' -- that would compete with private health insurance plans?" But instead of just trashing the poll, let's look at how the public option fared in other polls. A mid-October poll by CNN found that 61% would also favor a public option but this dropped to 55% in late October. And CNN is the same pollster that found 57% disapproved of Obama's handling of health care -- shown above. Democrats Should Not Give Up the Public OptionThere is reason to believe that much of the reasons for being opposed to the health care bills has to do with whether or not there is a public option. About two-thirds of those that supported the public option, 40% of Americans, would support the bill only if it had a public option according to CNN in their mid-October poll that showed 61% support. Ipsos conducted a poll 10/29-11/1 which found that opposition to the health care proposals in Congress exceed the support by double digits, 49% to 39%. But the very same people supported the public option, 51% to 43%. Democrats Still Faring Better Than RepublicansLet's zoom in on the poll by CBS News. They polled 1,167 adults nationwide from Friday to Monday. Only 30% approved of the way the Democrats in Congress were handling health care but an even slimmer 23% approved of the Republicans in Congress. Democrats still have the advantage with respect to the public option and their handling of health care versus Republicans. Whether or not they play hard ball with the Republicans is yet to be seen.
