There's a lot of buzz out there about Canadians and how they feel about their health care. So I took a look at the polls to see how they really felt.
The results of all the polls vary greatly because of the drastic differences in how the questions were worded so I recommend you to take a look at the poll questions to see what folks were responding to.
According to our poll of polls, Canadians have a very favorable view of their health care system. As high as 90% according to Nanos Research and as low as 65% according to Angus Reid.
| Pollster | Date | Favorable | Unfavorable |
|---|---|---|---|
| AVERAGE | 75.0% | 21.7% | |
| Harris Decima | 6/4-8/09 | 70 | 28 |
| Nanos Research | 10/10-18/09 | 90 | 5 |
| Angus Reid Strategies | 6/28-31/09 | 65 | 32 |
And when prompted which system they prefer, they overwhelmingly prefer their own system versus the US system.
| Pollster | Date | Canada | USA | Same | Unsure |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| AVERAGE | 58.0% | 17.0% | 24.0% | 10.5% | |
| Ekos Politics | 8/5-11/09 | 87 | 7 | - | - |
| Angus Reid Strategies | 7/28-31/09 | 32 | 17 | 36 | 15 |
| Harris Decima | 6/4-8/09 | 55 | 27 | 12 | 6 |
But the one caveat to all of this is the fact that more Canadians would prefer the USA system in the case of an emergency surgery.
| Pollster | Date | Canada | USA | Same | Unsure |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Angus Reid Strategies | 7/28-31/09 | 32 | 41 | 14 | 12 |
Emergency care has been listed in polls as the most important flaw to the Canadian system by Canadians themselves. Canadians are also more likely than Americans to know people that have paid for health care abroad.
Despite that, only 9% of a favorable view of the US health care system.
| Pollster | Date | Excellent | Good | Fair | Pair |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Angus Reid Strategies | 7/28-31/09 | 2 | 7 | 32 | 47 |
