Congress Does Not Deserve Reelection

10/28/2009, by Proloy Bhatta

HIGHLIGHTS

  • 42% and 25% have a positive view of the Democratic and Republican parties respectively.
  • 41% want their member of congress to win reelection.
  • Obama's approval rating is 51% and his favorable rating is 56%.

Just because voters are less likely to declare themselves as Republican and are more likely to want Democrats in congress does not mean they have a love affair with the Democratic party. This is based on the polls that show a possible Republican sweep in both the NJ and VA governor races. See yesterday's post.

The latest NBC News / Wall Street Journal poll shows this.

"What is your preference for the outcome of next year's congressional elections: a Congress controlled by Republicans or a Congress controlled by Democrats?"

Democrats 46%, Republicans 38%.

Similarly, 42% and 25% have a positive view of the Democratic and Republican parties respectively.

But when asked if they thought their representative deserves reelection, they said no.

"In the next election for U.S. Congress, do you feel that your representative deserves to be reelected, or do you think that it is time to give a new person a chance?"

Time for New Person 49%, Deserves Reelection 41%.

This is the dynamic at play in US politics. Voters trust the Republican brand the least after having lived through their governance for eight years but are not so keen on the Democratic brand either after just nine months.

The Democrats are not going to be enjoying these fancy poll numbers for long if Americans continue to think the country is headed in the wrong direction.

52% feel the nation is headed off on the wrong track which is the highest ever measured by NBC News during the Obama presidency.

Obama's approval rating is 51% and his favorable rating is 56%, which is at or near the bottom of his presidency.
