Obama's Approval Rating Average Dips to 47 Percent11/23/2009, by Proloy Bhatta HIGHLIGHTS
If we concern ourselves with only the polls conducted in the past couple of days, Obama's approval rating is down to 47%.
If we look at all of the recently released polls, Obama's approval rating barely sneaks above 50%.
Of the four pollster to measure Obama's approval rating below 50%, Gallup is the only one to poll the general adult population. See our article on "Is Obama's Approval Rating Really So Low?" to see the difference in how Obama polls among registered/likely voters and the general adult population. As per the pollsters, health care seems to be a major thorn in Obama's side ... as well as his losing of Independents. Gallup Daily Tracking said that health care is a drag on Obama's support. The ongoing, contentious debate over national healthcare reform has likely served as a drag on his public support, as have continuing economic problems. Americans are also concerned about the Obama administration's reliance on government spending to solve the nation's problems and the growing federal budget deficit. Since September, Obama's approval rating had been holding in the low 50s and, although it has reached 50% numerous times, it had never dropped below 50% until now. Rasmussen Reports says that support for health care has dropped to 38%. For the first time in the Obama Administration, the Approval Index has been in negative double digits for nine straight days. Among men, the President’s Approval Index rating is -20. Among women, it is -7. Support for the health care plan proposed by the President and Congressional Democrats has fallen to a new low of 38%. Sixty percent (60%) of voters believe passage of the bill will lead to higher health care costs. Fox News shows that 85% of Democrats still support the president but disapproval by Independents has creeped above 50%. Breaking down the numbers by political party shows how sharply split American voters are over the president's job performance. While 85 percent of Democrats approve of their party leader, 80 percent of Republicans and 51 percent of independents disapprove. Quinnipiac says two separate coalitions support Obama: "Increasingly, the President finds himself with two different coalitions, one that backs him on domestic matters and a completely different one that backs him on Afghanistan. That could create a challenge to his considerable political skills," said Peter Brown, assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute. CBS says he is losing the support of Independents: The president’s approval rating has dropped seven points among independents. 45% of independents now approve of how the president is handling his job; last month a majority of 52% approved.
