Views of the Afghanistan War Among Americans and Canadians

12/24/2009, by Proloy Bhatta

HIGHLIGHTS

  • Americans oppose the war but support a surge of troops.
  • Canadians oppose their troops in Afghanistan and oppose sending more troops.
  • War in Afghanistan (Americans), CNN, 12/16-20/09. Favor 43%, Oppose 55%.

Americans are conflicted in their views of Afghanistan. Although they oppose the war in Afghanistan, they support the Obama surge in Afghanistan.

Obama has effectively silenced the anti-war movement by:

  • running as an anti-war candidate, but continuing Bush's war policies
  • justifying war as the means for peace when he won the Nobel Peace Prize

Here are the polls showing that a majority support the surge in Afghanistan.
